A BLEEDING NATION

 My pen bleeds

With words that come straight out of a heavy heart

The Land is flooded

And its foundation is shaken

The Land bleeds

The nation cries out

Nigeria is soaked!

The blood of innocent lives have saturated the soil

Lives lost from stray bullets, misfired shots and injustice

The Land bleeds

The Nation cries out

We are getting accustomed to the sound of gunshots

We stare unshaken at our TV screens as news of insecurity is no longer "news"

Masked armed men now own our roads

The Land bleeds

The nation cries out

Education is the key to success

Yet, the lock has remained jammed over the years

Strikes, less qualified tutors, unpaid lecturers, yet the clock keeps ticking

Tomorrow is here, but, the leaders are denied the throne

The Land bleeds

The nation cries out

The air is dampened by fear

Fear of sexual abuse

We no longer feel safe

In our own fatherland

The Land bleeds

The nation cries out

Youths have obeyed the Clarion call

Served under the sun and in the rain

Yet, the heat of the sun vehemently scorches us

As we go about trying to beat unemployment

The Land bleeds

The nation cries out

Three square meals is now luxury

Healthy feeding is now for the wealthy

Our bellies are filled with pangs of hunger

The Land bleeds

The nation cries out

The Earth is filled

With bodies of those who died as a result of poor health care

No beds, doctors on strike, no oxygen, no drugs, quack health personnel

They could not afford to go to India, London, China or America, so they had to answer the call of death

The land bleeds

The nation cries out

Our places of worship are filled with divisions

As we vainly try to fight for the almighty

Our young hearts have been filled with hatred and denominational wars

The land bleeds

The nation cries out

Lost identities

Left to wander on the island of self discovery in confusion

Our leaders and parents have infiltrated our hearts with doctrines which only form a basis for segregation

The land bleeds

The nation cries out

Our pillows are soaked with tears

Nigeria is bleeding profusely

The youths have risen

We cry for help for the land bleeds

And the nation cries out
